Inside/Outside: From Mansion to Bowling Alley
Do you want to see Lyndhurst from the inside and out? Then this tour is for you! You will see the mansion’s two main floors filled with decorative pieces, art and furniture remaining from the three owners. You will learn about the families’ lavish lifestyles at the height of the Gilded Age, the estate’s 180 year history and about the exciting things that take place at Lyndhurst now. Then you will take a leisurely stroll towards the Hudson River, wending your way past restored “outdoor rooms,” the site of an elaborate treehouse and rare trees and gardens. While you take in the best views of the river, you’ll hear about several outbuildings and the estate’s “recreation center.” The 90-minute tour ends with a visit to the restored 19th-century bowling alley with an exhibit on Lyndhurst owner Helen Gould and neighbor Madam C. J. Walker.
Lyndhurst welcomes all visitors, but please note that this tour requires a trip up one staircase and extensive walking on uneven terrain, so please bring water and wear comfortable walking shoes. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or children under 6 years of age.
For everyone’s safety, Lyndhurst encourages masks in all indoor spaces. As in any public setting, we cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to COVID-19. By visiting Lyndhurst, you voluntarily assume such risks.
