NWC 2015 - 5th anniversary tournament

In the summer of 2015, Nintendo resurrected the legendary Nintendo World Championships at eight different locations across the country. This weekend at Replay FX, some of the regional NWC 15 champions have gathered to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the tournament, and are hosting a tournament of their own!
Games

We will be playing Nintendo World Championships Remix on the Nintendo WiiU system. This mini game was a part of the WiiU title NES Remix 2. NWC Remix consists of three sections of classic NES titles, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, and Dr Mario. You are given 6 minutes and 21 seconds to play through the gauntlet. The overall goal of the trio of games is to earn the highest score.

Section 1 - Super Mario Bros

In the first section of NWC Remix, you play Super Mario Bros, starting at World 1-1 with 99 lives, and the objective is to collect 50 coins as fast as possible. The score from this section is multiplied by 2 and added to your final score tally. This section was taken from the original 1990 Nintendo World Championships.

Section 2 - Super Mario Bros 3

The second section is similar in nature to the first section, but in you will play Super Mario Bros 3. You start in World 1 with 99 lives, and the goal is to collect 25 coins as fast as possible. The score from this section is added to your final score tally without a multiplier. This section was taken from the 1991 Nintendo Campus Challenge.

Section 3 - Dr Mario

In the final section of NWC Remix, you use your remaining time to score as many points as you can in Dr Mario. While the first two sections of NWC Remix are speedrunning tests, this final section is a score attack and your Dr Mario score is multiplied by 100 and added to your final score tally. The section was taken from the 1991 Nintendo Campus Challenge.

Once a player’s time is up, the game will end and tally up the scores from all three games.

Qualifying round

Between 11am and 6pm, players are invited to play NWC remix and submit scores. The line is first come/first server and players may make multiple attempts as long as they return to the back of the line after each attempt. Once the clock strikes 6pm, no more attempts may begin, but games that have already started may be completed. The top 16 score qualify for the knockout round.
