Betty Jean Steinshouer: Scribbling Women in Florida

Join the Lightner Museum and Florida Humanities as author Betty Jean Steinshouer takes a closer look at a dozen women authors who put Florida on the map. From Harriet Beecher Stowe, Constance Fenimore Woolson, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and her daughter Rose Wilder Lane, Elizabeth Bishop, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Rachel Carson, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and Zora Neale Hurston. All of these female authors gravitated to the Land of Flowers. Four frequented the Old City – Harriet Beecher Stowe, Constance Fenimore Woolson, Sarah Orne Jewett (in the 19th century), and of course Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (in the 20th century). In this presentation, Steinshouer will discuss all of the “Scribbling Women in Florida” while providing a special focus on five prominent female authors who frequented St. Augustine. This is a free event but reservations are required.
