Course Outline:

This hybrid course is based on a nine-week online independent study program with supporting in-person sessions with educator Deb Mortillaro as follows:

  • The course begins with a kickoff Zoom call on Sept. 26 from Noon to 2 p.m. (EST). where course content, study materials, and weekly expectations will be outlined.

  • Weekly check-ins will be conducted on Mondays in October via Zoom from Noon to 1 p.m. (EST).

  • Four two-hour in-person sessions will be conducted on Monday evenings in November from 6 to 8 p.m. (EST) and will also be available via Zoom for those who cannot attend.

  • A break to study will be offered the week of Dec. 5.

  • A REQUIRED in-person calibration day will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, Dec. 10.

  • The exam will be given on Sunday, Dec. 11.

Course Content and Structure:

All students will receive:

  • WSET Spirits Level 3 study packs (textbooks)

  • Access to the WSET online portal which contains quizzes, exercises and other study materials

  • Regular online educator availability for questions

  • Deb available via email

  • Students may have to purchase some additional samples to complete online tasting assignments

A minimum of 10 independent study hours per week are recommended to cover the online activities and read the relevant chapters in the textbook. The course follows a weekly structure, and it is important for each student to keep up with the work set for that week independently. Additionally, regular access and participation in online course activities is essential for success. Review all course specifications HERE.

The weekly one-hour Zoom check-ins in October will be helpful in reviewing what students should know each week, answering questions, and in keeping on task. The two hour, in-person evening sessions in November will focus on the theory questions and how to successfully answer them, along with an understanding of the knowledge needed for the multiple-choice questions. The REQUIRED in-person calibration day will be necessary for success on the tasting portion of the exam.
