Event Description

Buzzfeed editor Emmy Favilla presents a guide to spelling, grammar, and punctuation that reflects how readers use language online and IRL.

Emmy J. Favilla is the global copy chief at BuzzFeed, the media company that frequently incorporates memes, emoji, social media conventions, and internet slang in their pop culture coverage and news reporting. In A World Without “Whom” The Essential Guide to Language in the BuzzFeed Age, Favilla explains how she went about constructing a style guide for the modern  internet newsroom. Her descriptive approach to usage provides guidelines that can be wacky (the preferred spelling of "Cash me ousside, howbow dah") as well as practical (using the correct terms to describe someone's gender identity). Favilla joins us to discuss the changing editorial landscape at Buzzfeed and beyond.

Emmy J. Favilla will be in conversation with Ammon Shea, author of Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages.
