Tonight’s films together basically invented what we understand to be werewolf legend. Transforming under the full moon, the wolf/man hybrid creature, use of silver, transmission by bite – none of these aspects were prevalent in lycanthropic mythology prior to the release of this pair of Universal horror titles. Both films also feature the spectacular makeup work of ‘monster maker’ Jack Pierce who created the look of virtually all of the classic Universal monsters.
