Celebrate the launch of Beck Siegel Spratford’s new anthology, Why I Love Horror: Essays on Horror Literature with a panel discussion featuring some of the more prominent writers working in the genre: Clay McLeod Chapman, Rachel Harrison, Grady Hendrix, and Victor LaValle.


This event will take place in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor.


A love letter to the horror genre from many of the most influential and bestselling authors in the industry.


For twenty-five years, Becky Siegel Spratford has worked as a librarian in Reader Advisory, training library workers all over the world on how to engage their patrons and readers, and to use her place as a horror expert and critic to get the word out to others; to bring even more readers into the horror fold.


Why I Love Horror is a captivating anthology and heartfelt tribute to the horror genre featuring essays from several of the most celebrated contemporary horror writers including, Grady Hendrix, Paul Tremblay, Stephen Graham Jones, Josh Malerman, Victor LaValle, Tananarive Due, and Rachel Harrison.


To join the event in person | Doors will open 30 minutes before the program begins. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.




About the Speakers


Becky Spratford [MLIS] is a Librarian in Illinois specializing in serving patrons ages 13 and up. She trains library staff all over the world on how to match books with readers through the local public library. She runs the critically acclaimed RA training blog RA for All. She writes reviews for Booklist and a Horror review column for Library Journal. Becky was a 24 year locally elected Library Trustee and a former Board member for both the Reaching Across Illinois Library System and the Illinois Library Association. Known for her work with Horror readers, Becky is the author of three text books for library workers, most recently, The Reader’s Advisory Guide to Horror, Third Edition [ALA Editions, 2021] and Why I Love Horror [Saga Press, September, 2025]. She is on the Shirley Jackson Award Advisory Board and is a proud member of the Horror Writers Association, currently serving as the Association’s Secretary and Co-Chair of their Library Committee. Rachel Harrison is the USA Today bestselling author of Play Nice, So Thirsty, Black Sheep, Such Sharp Teeth, Cackle, and The Return, which was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel. Her short fiction has appeared in numerous anthologies and in her debut collection Bad Dolls. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and their cat/overlord. 


Grady Hendrix is the New York Times-bestselling author of Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, How To Sell a Haunted House, My Best Friend's Exorcism, and many more. His history of the horror paperback boom of the '70s and '80s, Paperbacks from Hell, won the Stoker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction. His books have been translated into 23 languages and sold over two million copies, which means he is guaranteed a seat on the space ark when the earth becomes uninhabitable. Victor LaValle is the author of eight works of fiction and two graphic novels. His novel, The Changeling, has been adapted for television on Apple TV+. His novel, The Devil in Silver, was adapted for television and will air on AMC in 2026. He served as showrunner. His most recent novel, Lone Women, was a national bestseller. He has been the recipient of two Bram Stoker Awards, a World Fantasy Award, and two Shirley Jackson Awards, among others.
