Event Description

The need to contribute something greater than ourselves takes myriad forms and is as ancient as it is universal. Paired with newly created work by Pittsburgh visual artists Linda Price-Sneddon and Val M. Cox in our second annual collaboration with art curator Jeffrey Jarzynka, PNME presents two world premiere commissions by composers D. J. Sparr and Ivette Herryman, with text by librettist Caitlin Vincent. The evening is a moving meditation ultimately asking the question: “When I’m gone... what remains?”

This evocative work traces the emotional journey of a contemporary woman as she struggles to conceive a child. Interweaving traditional fertility myths with key moments in the woman's experience, Nullipara explores the varied and often devastating impacts of infertility, which currently affects more than 6 million women in the United States alone.

Ivette Herryman

Inspired by one of the composer’s favorite works, Dido's lament, from Purcell’sDido and Aeneas, this work gives voice to one of humanity’s most shared yearnings. “I’m particularly touched by the moment in which the singer sings "remember me”-- a cry that comes from the deepest part of one's soul. I think about it as a collective cry, because we all have a longing to be remembered.”
