Event Description

Join The New York Public Library in welcoming Jonathan F. P. Rose, a visionary in urban development and renewal, for a discussion about his book, The Well-Tempered City: What Modern Science, Ancient Civilizations, and Human Nature Teach Us About the Future of Urban Life. He is joined by leading urban studies theorist, Richard Florida.

As the 21st century progresses, metropolitan regions will increasingly be affected by a series of global megatrends: climate change with attendant droughts and heat waves, income inequality, educational and health disparities, aging, housing insecurity, migrations, and many more. All of these will be accompanied by a heightened sense of volatility and uncertainty. And the financial volatility of the interconnected global economy will only make many regions more vulnerable. But there are five characteristics that cities and metropolitan regions can develop to not only help prepare for these megatrends, but to thrive. Join Jonathan Rose as he shares these five characteristics outlined in his new book, The Well-Tempered City, and discusses creating a higher purpose for cities.

Jonathan F. P. Rose works with cities and not-for-profits to plan and build green affordable and mixed-income housing and cultural, health, and educational centers. Recognized for creating communities that literally heal both residents and neighborhoods, Rose is one of the nation’s leading thinkers on the integration of environmental, social, and economic solutions to the urban issues facing us today. Rose’s work as the founder of investment, development and urban planning firm The Jonathan Rose Companies has received rewards from the Urban Land Institute, American Institute of Architects, American Planning Association, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and many others. He is cofounder of the Garrison Institute and the creator of its Climate, Mind, and Behavior program.

Richard Florida is the world’s leading urbanist. He is a researcher and professor, serving as the Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Global Research Professor at New York University and a Visiting Fellow at Florida International University. He is a writer and journalist, having penned several global best sellers, including the award winning The Rise of the Creative Class and serving as senior editor for The Atlantic, where he co-founded and serves as Editor-at-Large for CityLab. And he is an entrepreneur, as founder of the Creative Class Group which works closely with governments and companies worldwide. A 2013 MIT study named him the world’s most influential thought leader. And TIME magazine recognized his Twitter feed as one of the 140 most influential in the world.

Program is free, but advance registration is recommended. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance.
