As part of its Guest Programmer Series, the Hollywood Theater in Dormont is pleased to team up with cartoonist, illustrator, writer, and musician Wayno to present THEORY OF OBSCURITY, the new documentary about the iconic renegade cult band The Residents. From the group's formation in Shreveport to their success in the burgeoning San Francisco avant-garde music scene of the 60s and 70s, The Residents redefined what a rock band could be. With the advent of music videos in the 1980s, these masked musicians gained global fame as MTV darlings and serious art world figures.
Wayno is the creator of the comic panel WaynoVision, and his humorous illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Nickelodeon Magazine, and many others. He is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, and serves as President of the National Cartoonists Society's Pittsburgh Chapter. His rumored association with the enigmatic Bushmiller Society has never been definitively confirmed. As a longtime fan and collector of many types of music, both mainstream and fringe, Wayno is pleased to present the Pittsburgh premiere of Theory of Obscurity: A Film About the Residents.
