Event Description

Kara Walker, in collaboration with The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Philadelphia. “Fibbergibbet” and “Mumbo Jumbo: Kara E. Walker in Two Acts” (Process Image), c. 2004. Photo credit: Carlos Avendaño.

This Black History Month, dive into the artistic process of nine Artists-in-Residence whose projects explore themes of historical reclamation, cultural identity, and Afrofuturism. Sift through a selection of artist boxes to uncover test prints, notes, photographs, scale models, and production materials that reveal the artists’ conceptual and material approach over the course of their residencies.

On this tour, we’ll unpack projects that explored identity and culture through the following artist boxes:

Kara Walker: Fibbergibbet and Mumbo Jumbo: Kara E. Walker in Two Acts, 2004
Faith Ringgold: The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles and Dancing at the Louvre, 2022
Glenn Ligon: Skin Tight, 1995
