Discover the dissolute and depraved characters lurking within the books and papers held at the Library. Crime writers, journalists, and actors read aloud stories of true crime from New York history and beyond.

Meet a cast of characters including inept murderers, fanatics and hypocrites attempting to police the morals of turn-of-the-century Manhattan, men and women whose presumed guilt for homicide has more to do with the color of their skin than any misdeeds, and everyday citizens with unsettling ideas about administering justice. From the sensational to the sober, writings from Joseph Mitchell, Zora Neale Hurston, and others reveal the blurred lines between supposed villains and victims, and the misogyny, xenophobia,  and racism that have long figured into the record of right and wrong.
