Tonality

After many years of making paintings, in recent years I have turned to drawing as my primary medium. Most of the exhibited works entail ink drawing, either as the sole medium or layered over a base of watercolor.

The theme behind Tonality is the link between sound and vision; the concept of visual patterns that are based on sound. Some images are based on historical experiments that transcribed sounds into specific configurations, other patterns are invented and some created from natural forms.

The common thread in all of these works is the idea of overlaying images, marks and materials over one another. I am interested in: making two or more images visible at once, producing colors through pigment dispersion, transparency and optical mixture, and forming images with layered marks. The shifting, repetitive forms and color contrasts also create a sense of motion.

The ink drawings use a static-like field of marks to describe patterns and motifs. The tonal static fill gives forms a sense of impermanence, dissolution and convergence, like building forms with white noise.
