Event Description

Attend a Flower Design Demonstration with TJ McGrath! This presentation will talk about the principles of sustainable floristry, emphasizing the importance of using locally grown flowers as a means to reduce the environmental impact of the floral industry. It will explore the benefits of sourcing flowers from nearby farms, including lower carbon emissions from transportation and support for local economies. Attendees will gain practical insights into implementing sustainable approaches in their designs, while fostering a deeper appreciation for the beauty and environmental significance of locally grown blooms.  One lucky participant will leave with a floral arrangement, as the demonstration bouquet will be raffled off at the end of this presentation!

New Jersey based floral artist, TJ McGrath Design is a floral studio and micro flower farm offering retail florals via subscription service, events, mentoring, and sustainable floral design education through workshops and private 1:1 lessons. TJ is a generous teacher and an intuitive designer who is passionate about increasing the awareness of the need for sustainability of the floral industry. What is sustainable floristry you might ask?  The simple answer is that he works hard to minimize the impact on our environment by sourcing from small, local, independent flower farms and using design tools that are reusable or compostable. Mcgrath, a headline speaker at the 2022 Slow Flower Summit hosted at Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, speaks on Sustainability in Floristry around the country.

His table design for the NYBG's 2023 annual fundraising Orchid Dinner at the Plaza Hotel NYC was featured in Veranda Magazine's top nine stand-out designs from the event. His work has also been featured in LIJXE Interiors & Design, and The Wall Street Journal. He was also featured in the pages, and on the cover of, Florists Review Magazine.

In three short years McGrath's work, ethos and commitment to sustainable design practices and education have led to educational workshop collaborations with global leaders in the floral industry.

Please note, this is a demonstration only! You will be learning how to make your own arrangements, but not participating!
