Based on the wildly popular book by renowned author Sharon K. McGhee, The Pocketbook Monologues explores the term, “pocketbook,” which was used by many older African-American women when the subject of sexuality was discussed privately.
Inspired by Sheryl Lee Ralph’s, Sometimes I Cry and following the blueprint established by Eve Ensler, author Sharon K. McGhee keeps the woman-of-color female perspective front and center.
The Pocketbook Monologues started a movement with a mission of empowering and entertaining women of color about HIV/Aids, and the adaptation of the content to theatrical form continues that mission.
