The Mikado

Note that due to the Carnegie Library closures, our venue is also closed.

There is a livestream of the show on 3/14/20 for ticket purchasers.  After today, we will be offering two shows online for our ticket holders if you cannot make the broadcast tonight at 8 pm and you were not able to be at your last public attended show before the closure on 3/13/20.  It's a great show and you will want to see it!  Thanks for your patronage.

The Pittsburgh Savoyards close their 82nd season this March with Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operetta, The Mikado. Taped Performances on March 13 & 14, 2020 at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall in Carnegie, PA will be available to our ticket purchasers if they have missed one of the livefeed shows. Closed Captioning will be included for both shows.

Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (the Japanese emperor), has fled in disguise to avoid marrying a much older suitor (Katisha), and to find and marry his own beloved, the beautiful Yum-Yum. Yum-Yum, however, is the ward of Ko-Ko, the lord high executioner, and has become betrothed to him against her will. In the meantime, Ko-Ko finds his job difficult to carry out as the Mikado puts pressure on him to fulfill his quota of killings, but the executioner realizes he is too soft-hearted to kill anyone. His solution is to trade a month of marriage to Yum-Yum for Nanki-Poo’s life (though he only pretends to kill him), but, of course, the plan backfires as Ko-Ko finds himself subject to capital punishment for allegedly killing the Mikado’s son. The tangled web of plot lines eventually unravels in Gilbert’s usual topsy-turvy manner, and every lives happily ever after.
