Event Description
THE HAND OF GOD

Academy Award-winning writer and director Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo, The Great Beauty, The Young Pope) has crafted his most personal film, the poignant and largely autobiographical story of teenage Fabietto Schisa (Filippo Scotti) as he navigates the tumultuous Naples of the 1980s. Fabietto is surrounded by a large extended family including his mother who likes to play practical jokes, his cheerful, communist father who has a secret mistress, his movie star-hopeful older brother, a sister who’s always in the bathroom, and a beautiful but troubled aunt and her abusive husband. An aging baroness lives upstairs. The young Fabietto has two obsessions – the first is football -- and the other is the cinema of Federico Fellini. Life brings unexpected joys, including the arrival of football legend Diego Maradona in his hometown -- and an unimaginable tragedy that thrusts Fabietto suddenly into adulthood and sets his future in motion. Sorrentino’s tale of family, icons, loss, and ultimately hope, received the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize when it premiered at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival.  Paulo Sorrentino is the recipient of MFF’s 2021 International Spotlight Award.  Award Presentation and conversation with Sorrentino immediately following screening. The award will be presented by the Ambassador of Italy to the United States Mariangela Zappia.
