Join the New York Public Library and OMNY Taiko at Richmondtown Library for a presentation of Japanese Taiko drumming at the 2026 World Literature and Arts Festival!
OMNY Taiko comes to Richmondtown Library for a live performance of three dynamic taiko drumming pieces that highlight the power, rhythm, and movements of the ancient art form. Along the way, we’ll share a bit about the history and cultural significance of taiko in Japan and the Asian-American community. The experience will also include interactive moments where participants can try basic rhythms, learn simple taiko form (kata), and practice vocal shouts (kiai) to connect and share energy with others, offering a hands-on introduction to the spirit of taiko.
OMNY Taiko is a vibrant, tight-knit community drumming group and nonprofit organization striving to share the art of taiko drumming with people and communities across the New York City area through inclusive, accessible performances, classes, and workshops.
OMNY stands for “One Miracle in New York,” and was founded in 2006 as a youth initiative by Shumei, a Japanese spiritual organization. The miracle in their name refers to the generosity of a couple who allowed their original members to practice in their garage with their very first “drums,” made out of tires. Under the guidance of their teacher, Koji Nakamura Sensei, and original leaders Linda and Tony Tan, we expanded into a community group during the 2010s. In 2024, OMNY Taiko became an independent nonprofit. Led by Artistic Director Crissy Lau, they currently hold practices and classes at the Brooklyn Music School. their repertoire includes a mix of traditional styles, contemporary pieces, and original compositions.
