Kerry James Marshall is renowned for paintings that confront the underrepresentation of Black figures in Western art. Currently based in Chicago and originally from Birmingham, Alabama—he is considered one of the most influential artists working today. In Kerry James Marshall: The Complete Prints, 1976–2022, Susan Tallman explores the artist’s extensive print production, much of which has remained largely unseen and unknown to the public. She offers insight into the themes, techniques, and social commentary that define his work, as well as the discoveries that shaped the catalog raisonné.
Coinciding with the Library’s Print Collection’s recent acquisition of one of Marshall’s prints, Tallman examines the evolution of a groundbreaking artist and the role of printed images and printmaking in his broader practice.
