Event Description

As winter turns to spring and snow begins to melt, the ground can get very soggy. This extra water leads to the creation of many temporary ponds, otherwise known as vernal pools, in the woodlands and wetlands in our parks.

The melting snow is a signal for amphibians to get up and get out (our March theme!) to begin their spring mating rituals, which rely on these temporary pools as nurseries for their young. One very loud amphibian that calls our wetlands home is the spring peeper, often heard in the evenings during March and April. Despite their tiny size, they are capable of making sounds louder than a lawnmower or jackhammer. These calls are often associated with the arrival of spring.

Let's get ourselves up and out to our local wetlands to listen and look for these tiny animals! Join Parks Conservancy educators at the Lower Frick Lot off of Lancaster Ave in Regent Square for a hike through the park to find some amphibian friends.

Registration is required for this event.

This is an all-ages event. Children should be accompanied by an adult.

This hike is rain or shine. Weather-appropriate clothes and footwear with good tread are encouraged. Bring a flashlight if you'd like, as we will be in the park past sunset.
