Silent Sky

The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, Silent Sky explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. When Ms. Leavitt begins work at the Harvard Observatory to chart the stars for a renowned astronomer in the early 1900s, she isn’t allowed to touch a telescope. However, Henrietta’s dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth. Her greatest discovery was the “Period-Luminosity Relation” which led to the first distance measurement for a galaxy outside the Milky Way, a discovery so important that she was nominated for the Nobel Prize. A story that also explores family obligations and the possibility of love, Silent Sky is a lively, funny and thought-provoking look at the intersection of science, faith, and music evening of theatre.

“It is an absolute delight to tell a story that highlights the important role women play in science,” says Director Hilerre Kirsch. “Their same passion for the stars I see every day in our students’ passion for the arts -  and this story exemplifies how the two are inherently connected, not distant and different as so many seem to think.”
