Saturday Matinee!
(1916) dir Lois Weber w/Mary MacLaren, Harry Griffith, Mattie Witting [60 min; DCP]
In SHOES, just one of the fifteen films that she directed in 1916, Weber weaves the beautifully simple story of a destitute shop girl with on-location exteriors shot around Los Angeles to create her masterpiece. The director’s brand-new discovery, sixteen-year-old MacLaren is the embodiment of too-early world-weariness. SHOES is a plea for women’s equality that portrays the reality and tragedy of a shop girl in modern society.
