Event Description

The Holland Theatre is proud to welcome back Sierra Hull, who graced our stage in 2017 and is now returning with a full band. This performance will feature opening sets from special guests Scott Mulvahill and Dead Horses.

In her first 25 years alone, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age 12, then landed a deal with Rounder Records just a year later. Hull’s widely acclaimed album Weighted Mind -- a Béla Fleck-produced effort nominated for Best Folk Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards -- was described by NPR as “stunning,” with Hull’s artistic trajectory compared by the Chicago Tribune to bluegrass crossover star Alison Krauss.

Hull's fourth full-length for Rounder is an elegantly inventive and endlessly captivating album called 25 Trips. Revealing her profound warmth as a storyteller, 25 Trips finds Hull shedding light on the beauty and chaos and sometimes sorrow of growing up and getting older. Encompassing everything from bluegrass to folk-pop to ethereal alt-rock, 25 Trips remains rooted in the sophisticated musicianship that Hull has cultivated almost her entire life.

Frontman. Singer-songwriter. World-renowned upright bassist. Multi-instrumentalist. For the past decade, Scott Mulvahill has left his unique mark on the intersecting worlds of Americana, bluegrass, folk, jazz, rock & roll, and roots music. Already acclaimed for his work alongside icons like Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby, he turned a new page with Himalayas, a versatile solo album that celebrates the full spread of his abilities. Bass Magazine described the album as an “ingenious blend of acoustic bass body pats, string pull-offs, harmony-implying pedal tones and double-stops, and counterlines seamlessly fit to his impassioned vocals and introspective lyrics.”

Dead Horses isn’t a band in the conventional sense. Rather, it’s an intimate, folk-inspired conversation between two close friends. At its core, the participants are guitarist/singer Sarah Vos and bassist Daniel Wolff. To date, Dead Horses has released three studio albums, an Audiotree Live Session, three singles, a two-song EP, and, most recently an eclectic five-song EP, Birds. Dead Horses weave together a vibrant patchwork of classic and contemporary influences that span trad roots, indie- folk, and other experimental musical idioms. Rolling Stone lauded the duo’s "smoky vocals [and] cinematic lyrics” and named the band an "Artist You Need to Know."
