Event Description

Chicago made history in 2013 when it closed 50 public schools. But that’s only part of the story. Starting in 2001 – and over the past 18 years – Chicago’s public school system has closed or fired all the teachers at an astounding 200-plus schools. And during that time, CPS has opened almost as many schools as it closed, including many charter schools, specialty schools, and test-in schools. What has this upheaval meant for Chicago and its communities? Join WBEZ for a public conversation that wraps up a week-long series of stories exploring how and why Chicago turned to school closings, the vast scale, and how a generation of school closings and openings have impacted students and families. At the site of a school closed in 2013, you will hear firsthand experiences from Chicagoans affected by school closings and openings and you will get the chance to tell your story. You can also share your views on what the next mayor of Chicago should know about school closings.
