Event Description

The acclaimed climate scientist discusses the power of collective action to fight climate change.

Katharine Hayhoe is one of the nation's most persuasive speakers on climate change. In her new book she offers practical guidance on how, together, we can push forward unity on the issue despite our differences. Hayhoe intertwines everyday stories from her own life and scientific snapshots to help us understand some of the factors that drive people's resistance to climate solutions. She argues that as important as presenting the facts may be, so is finding common ground. A humane look at the range of ideas on the matter, Saving Us demonstrates that small, empathetic conversations can lead us to a shared vision of the future.

Katharine Hayhoe speaks to academic, environmentalist activist, and public servant Tia Nelson, whose father, Governor Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, founded the first Earth Day 50 years ago.

Presented as part of The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library's Treasures, which showcases some of the most extraordinary items from the 56 million in our collections. Among them is a poster from the first Earth Day in New York City (1970). The event will begin with a short curator talk given by Meredith Mann, Librarian at the Manuscripts and Archives Division of NYPL's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, on the history of climate activism embedded in the poster and the archives of the Environmental Action Coalition, in which it is contained.
