Russell Shorto’s newest book, Taking Manhattan, is another vibrant tale about American beginnings. In 1664, when the English decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island, no one could anticipate it would set off the invention of New York City. The origins of what might be termed the first modern city blended the multiethnic, capitalistic society of New Amsterdam with the power of the rising English empire. But New York’s birth is also the story of brutal dispossession of Native Americans and the roots of American slavery. Drawing on newly translated materials and neglected histories—of religious refugees, Indigenous tribes, and free and enslaved Africans—Russell Shorto illuminates the paradox of New York’s origins—boundless opportunity coupled with subjugation and displacement.

Russell Shorto retells the riveting story of the birth of New York City as a center of capitalism and pluralism, a foundation from which America would rise.
