At age 83, legendary author Robert Caro pulls back the curtains on his process, answering at last the question he is asked most often: why does it take him so long to write his books?

Robert Caro realized early on in his career that to portray the powerful in the way he intended, he also needed to write about the powerless people whose lives were impacted by his subjects. In Working, a collection of essays and interviews—some previously published, others new—the author of the Robert Moses biography The Power Broker and the five-volume The Years of Lyndon Johnson, dives deep into how he learned to conduct research, report, and write. From scrawling first drafts by hand to collaborating with his wife, developing his practice of handling documents and witnesses, and his preference for typing on a Smith Corona, Caro lets readers in on the untold backstories to the titles that made him famous.

Decidedly not a memoir—though Caro claims that’s coming soon—he acknowledges that time is passing. Before too much does, the biographer, who has spent much time doing what he does best in the Allen Room of The New York Public Library, returns home to share some stories of his own. He will be joined by William P. Kelly, The New York Public Library’s Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Research Libraries.
