After being released from prison for killing a man, Matt Calder (Mitchum) returns to a boomtown in the Northwest to pick up his young son, Mark, who was left in the care of Kay (Monroe) a dance hall singer. Calder and his son set up a farm, and find themselves rescuing Kay and her husband, Weston, when their raft hits rapids. Weston abandons them and Kay, Matt and Mark must flee to safety on the raft.
