Rivers of Steel and Point State Park (DCNR) are teaming up for a STEM-Based Homeschool Student Day.

Catch a ride with the Rivers of Steel Explorer to Point State Park to learn more from park naturalists about bioswales and  the native plants that help the bioswale in Point State Park do its job.  Learn how to identify the daily bird visitors to the park and the rivers.  Then join Rivers of Steel science educators to test the water chemistry of the rivers before hopping back onboard Explorer to collect plankton and macroinvertebrates and examine living indicators of water quality.  Students will construct a hypothesis about the health of Pittsburgh's rivers and test their theory by applying scientific principles.  

Explorer is located behind Carnegie Science Center (adjacent to the submarine).  Parents/Guardians may utilize the Carnegie Science Center parking lot for drop-off and pick-up of students and will be asked to sign their child(ren) in and out of the program with a Rivers of Steel staff member at the boat dock.  All students must have a signed permission waiver to attend this program.  Click here to download waiver.

All registration fees must be paid in advance

Program may be cancelled or rescheduled if river or mechanical conditions do not permit the boat to sail.  Full refunds will be given in the event of a river-related or mechanical cancellation.  All other tickets are nonrefundable.  

Rivers of Steel is not affiliated with Carnegie Science Center, but they graciously allow our visitors to utilize their parking lot.  Please consider visiting their facility while you wait for your child(ren).
