Ride With The King - Black History Tour 2019

RIDE WITH THE KING:  BLACK HISTORY TOUR


Saturday, January 19, 2019  /  MLK Holiday Weekend  /  9 AM - 2:30 PM


Hear the first-hand stories from the leaders in Pittsburgh's African American church community, dating back to the 1800’s to present.


While inside these (3) churches you will be immersed in Pittsburgh's African American history through the eyes of these churches, representing generations past and present.


Also, included are two additional tour stops:


August Wilson Center, open 1:45pm - 2:30pm only, where you will experience "Familiar Boundaries. Infinite Possibilities" which features the work of 12 regional, national, and international Black contemporary artists. The exhibition features Flying Girls the work of international artist Peju Alatise.


Dollar Bank, where you will see original handwritten ledgers containing records of Dollar Bank's African American customers from the 1800s.  On display will be the 1860 ledger documenting our first mortgage to an African American.  Be sure to also see the medical bag and license of Dollar Bank depositor John Paul Golden, M.D., the first African American graduate of what would become the University of Pittsburgh Medical School.


Two tour formats are being offered:  BUS TOUR and SELF-GUIDED TOUR 


Bus Tour (not handicap accessible/no lift)...at 9:00am, start your tour at Dollar Bank, 340 Fourth Avenue.  Bus departs promptly at 9:45AM for church tours, before arriving to final destination, August Wilson Center.  Tickets are limited, buy now!


Self-Guided Tour...start your tour at any of the 5 tour locations.  All tour locations will be open from 9:00am-2:30pm (except for August Wilson Center, open 1:45pm - 2:30pm only).  Simply show your ticket at each entrance.  Please go to www.DoorsOpenPgh.org for tour map.  Printed tour maps will be made available at each location as well (while supplies last).  


PLEASE READ:



  • Bus tour is not handicap accessible (no lift available).

  • Bethel AME church is not handicap accessible (no elevator).

  • August Wilson Center is only open 1:45pm - 2:30pm

  • Restrooms are available at every stop along the tour.

  • Photography is allowed at each tour stop (some restrictions apply at Dollar Bank).

  • Self-Guided Tour is rain/shine (bus and self-guided).  No refunds.

  • Bus Tour will be fully refunded only if buses do not operate due to weather.

  • Tickets proceeds will benefit all three churches and the presenting organization, DOORS OPEN Pittsburgh (non-profit, 501c3).
