Where are five Department Stores in downtown Pittsburgh?
You'll see them on this tour. You'll recognize their architectural features and learn about these turn of the Century marvels. They led the way in the development of Pittsburgh.
Joseph Horne's, McCreery's, Gimbel's, Frank and Seder, and Kaufmann's, now have been “repurposed” and they are starting their second lives.
These fine buildings were the cultural institutions of their hay day (about1900-1930). The movers and shakers of Pittsburgh curated their wares, and all types people flocked to them. The owners not only carried a full line of merchandise, but made special efforts to provide the customers with special amenities.
Colorful historical tales will be told and the rich architectural features will be examined. Participants will have the unique experience of going into several of the these stores and pondering their reuse scenarios.
In addition to the department stores, we will also be catching glimpses of several wonderful architectural nuggets along the route.
Proceeds from this tour will benefit Preservation Pittsburgh, a non-profit advocacy group dedicated to preservation of our region's historic, architectural, cultural and environmental heritage.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
