Opening Reception for "Reflections" - An Exhibition of Select Recent Prints by Kathleen Sherin
Making art is how I process my experiences and thoughts. I enjoy the physicality of the printmaking process and as an intuitive and reactionary printmaker my ideas grow and evolve through a constant engagement with process. I give myself the freedom to wander with an idea and to follow various possible pathways always with openness to growth and discovery. As ideas develop through exploration and experimentation new areas of focus emerge. This exhibition contains some of the explored pathways in works completed between 2016 - 2021 (from series “Storms”, “Stable Structures and Disruptive Forces” and “Shadowland”)
I work on an etching press using direct non-chemically mediated printmaking techniques. All my final pieces are one-of-a-kind prints. I process all my prints by hand and intentionally leave traces of my presence in the process on the final print. At times to create the final piece I cut apart prints and reassemble them to create new wholes
ARTIST BIO
Kathleen Sherin began to explore printmaking as a graduate student in painting at the University of Buffalo (MFA 1985) and since then has evolved unique methods of creating her energized, one-of-kind, abstract prints. Working on an etching press she employs various combinations of collagraph, relief printing, drypoint, carborundum, chine collé, and monoprint techniques. Many of her pieces are “assembled” as she cuts and reassembles new wholes from distinct parts.
Sherin’s work is in the permanent collections at Roswell Park and Burchfield-Penney as well as many private collections. She has exhibited her prints in over 100 feature and group exhibitions throughout the United States. Kathy has been a studio artist at Buffalo Arts Studio since 2002 and creates her larger prints at the UB print shop as part of the ePIC (Experimental Print Imaging Center) program.
