Summertime (France/Belgium, 2015; 105 minutes)
Director: Catherine Corsini
French with English subtitles
Country girl meets Paris girl during the politically turbulent 1970s. After the end of an affair with another woman, broken-hearted Delphine (Izïa Higelin) leaves her family’s farm in rural France for The City of Lights. There she meets the beautiful Carole (Cécile De France), a militant feminist, and she’s soon caught up in her group of activists and the emerging political scene.
Although Delphine is reserved and Carole has a boyfriend, the chemistry between the two ignites the events that follow. When a family emergency pulls Delphine back to the country, she returns to the closet. The situation becomes more complicated when Carole arrives as her “friend.” As the two women recklessly try but fail to control their passion, neighbors begin to realize the truth. Sooner or later, Delphine must decide how honest she can be and whether she has the courage to choose her lover over her family.
Directed and co-written by Catherine Corsini, this romantic tear-jerker is notable due to the strong performances and chemistry of the two leads. Also noteworthy are the beautifully shot love scenes.
