2019, dir Melina Matsoukas w/Daniel Kaluuya, Jodie Turner-Smith, Bokeem Woodbine, Chloë Sevigny, Flea, Sturgill Simpson, 132 min, DCP
While on a forgettable first date together in Ohio, a man (Kaluuya) and a woman (Turner-Smith), are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the couple are forced to go on the run. But the incident is captured on video and goes viral, and the couple unwittingly become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people across the country.
Director Melina Matsoukas (Insecure, Beyoncé’s Formation) and screenwriter Lena Waithe (The Chi, Dear White People) have created an exciting, poignant, and unapologetically mythological film that goes way beyond being an African-American riff on Bonnie & Clyde.
