The current lineup consists of guitar freak Buckethead (Guns n Roses, Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains), bassist and producer extraordinaire Bill Laswell, and drummer Brain (Primus, Guns n Roses, Tom Waits).

The group originally formed in 1992 when Laswell assembled an album project Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis), which included Bootsy Collins on bass and vocals, P Funk/ Talking Heads keyboard legend Bernie Worrell and Afrika Baby Bam of the Jungle Brothers. The album was release on Laswell’s Axiom Records (through Island).

After sporadic live dates in the 90’s with a quartet version, Bucket, Bill, Brain and DJ Disk (Herbie Hancock, Invisibl Skratch Piklz), the band added Bernie Worrell to live shows in 2004, including a Bonnaroo appearance that year, which resulted in a live album release. Worrell passed away in 2016.

Primus’ Les Claypool had first worked with Buckethead, Brain and Bernie together as Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains, starting with an infamous improv live debut at the first Bonnaroo (2002).  The band went on to release its sole album The Big Eyeball in the Sky in 2004 on Claypool’s Prawn Song Records. Claypool had produced and played on Buckethead’s 1999 album Monsters and Robots, which included Brain and some additional production by Laswell.  This album got the attention of Axl Rose, who added Buckethead and Brain to GnR shortly thereafter. Brain’s long time musical partner, keyboardist Melissa Reese, is a current member of GnR.

Bill Laswell, in addition to playing bass on countless releases under his own name and various band projects (Material, Massacre, Painkiller and Tabla Beat Science to name a few), he is one of the most prolific producers of all time, having recorded or mixed some of the biggest and most important names in contemporary music.  These include: Bob Marley, Miles Davis, Mick Jagger, Herbie Hancock, George Clinton, Peter Gabriel, Carlos Santana, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop, the Ramones, Fela Kuti, Bootsy Collins, Sly & Robbie, Matisyahu, Afrika Bambaataa, Angélique Kidjo, Yoko Ono, Gil Scott-Heron, Laurie Anderson, Public Image Ltd. and literally hundreds of others.

Other previous Laswell collaborators include Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Serj Tankian (System Of A Down), John Zorn, Pharoah Sanders, James Blood Ulmer, the Last Poets, William S. Burroughs, Paul Bowles, Brian Eno, Ginger Baker, Whitney Houston, Archie Shepp, the Golden Palominos, Manu Dibango, Motorhead, Buddy Miles, Gigi, Jah Wobble, Jonas Hellborg, Ronald Shannon Jackson and many more.
