Event Description

“Art is a force, you see, art is a vital force, it is alive for us.” –Charles White

PopRally invites you to experience the work of Charles White during an evening of frenetic jazz and civic-minded art. Celebrate White’s vision of art as a vital force as cross-disciplinary collectives respond to his creative and social ideals.

Onyx Collective will move through the galleries, riffing on the gospel and calypso sounds of White’s contemporaries. Their performance will culminate in a genre-bending dance floor set stacked with musicians and vocalists. Meanwhile, For Freedoms invites you to contribute to a mural as part of their artistic platform for civic engagement, discourse, and direct action. Visit the exhibition Charles White: A Retrospective throughout the evening and enjoy an open bar.

Admission is $25. You must be 21 or older to attend this event.

Please enter through The Ronald S. and Jo Carole Lauder Building entrance at 11 West 53 Street.

Onyx Collective is a nebulous jazz ensemble whose name you may have overheard in downtown Manhattan at some point in the past couple years. If they seem elusive, it is because oftentimes they are. Onyx shows are unannounced, impromptu affairs: you can find them performing in a basement, at a cocktail lounge atop a hotel, on the street, or in a storefront. The lineup is interchangeable, as is the kind of music they play. Onyx Collective has previously performed and toured with artists Nick Hakim, Princess Nokia, Dev Hynes, Wiki, and Kamasi Washington.

For Freedoms is a platform for greater participation in the arts and in civil society. They produce exhibitions, installations, public programs, and billboard campaigns to advocate for inclusive civic participation. Inspired by American artist Norman Rockwell’s paintings of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms (1941)—freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear—For Freedoms Federation uses art to encourage and deepen public explorations of freedom in the 21st century.

PopRally is a series of events at The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 that serve as a gateway for young and diverse audiences to engage with MoMA. Led by a cross-departmental committee of Museum staff, PopRally produces dynamic programs including artist collaborations, performances, film screenings, and digital content that encourage new and experimental ways of encountering modern and contemporary art.
