Event Description

Saini’s groundbreaking exploration of gendered oppression looks for truth behind distorted ideas about male supremacy.

In-person registration for this event has sold out. A limited number of standby tickets will be available on the night of the event.

For centuries, prominent thinkers have treated male domination among humans as natural or inevitable. But how would our understanding of gender inequality look if we didn’t assume that men have always ruled over women? Award-winning science journalist Angela Saini explores the roots of what we call patriarchy, uncovering a complex history of how it first became embedded in societies and spread across the globe from prehistory into the present. Relying on research that stretches from the earliest known human settlements to contemporary gender issues, Saini makes the case that there was never anything inevitable about male domination, and that our history of gender and power dynamics is far more diverse, and fluid, than many people believe.

Saini speaks with journalist Nona Willis Aronowitz about why, how, and where patriarchy manifests and endures.
