KIRK DOUGLAS MEMORIAL TRIBUTE!
1957 dir Stanley Kubrick w/Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, Adolphe Menjou, 88 min, DCP
We pay tribute to Kirk Douglas – one of the last movie stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood who passed away this month – with three of our favorites of his films.
A French commander in the trenches of WWI (Douglas) protests the mistreatment of his men and the futility of their campaigns in this stunning anti-war film from Stanley Kubrick. A landmark work by any standard, PATHS OF GLORY probably would not have been made without the involvement of Kirk Douglas as both producer and star. His reputation allowed the film to secure funding and his passion for the project lead him to support the bleak ending to the film – despite the concerns of the studio and even Kubrick himself.
