Julie Orringer and Nell Freudenberger talk about Orringer’s recent novel, The Flight Portfolio, based on the true story of Varian Fry’s attempt to save the work, and lives, of writers and artists fleeing the Holocaust.


Julie Orringer is the author of the best-selling novel The Invisible Bridge and the award-winning short-story collection How to Breathe Underwater, which was a New York Times Notable Book. She is the winner of the Paris Review’s Plimpton Prize for Fiction and the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and Stanford University. Orringer worked on The Flight Portfolio during her Cullman Center Fellowship in 2008-2009.


Nell Freudenberger is the author most recently of Lost and Wanted, as well as of the novels The Newlyweds and The Dissident, and the story collection Lucky Girls, winner of the PEN/Malamud Award and the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Whiting Award, she was the Rona Jaffe Foundation Fellow at the Cullman Center in 2007-2008.
