Breakfast in the Big Chair

Nile Singers play Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” and “Songs from the Big Chair” by Tears for Fears

Saturday, June 18
Doors at 7 pm, show at 8 pm
$15 in advance, $20 day-of-show

Nile Singers reimagine classic albums with love and abandon. It’s not a tribute band, per se, since they don’t feel beholden to note-for-note fidelity. Instead, Nile Singers take well-loved albums and make the music their own. Did Pink Floyd have a horn section? A woman singing Mick Jagger? Flute, clarinet, and bowed string bass instead of synth? Nile Singers say an emphatic, “Yes, please!”

Beginning on a lark to play Floyd they grew up loving, Nile Singers moved on to Supertramp, then The Stones, and now Tears for Fears. For their June 18 show at the Westcott Theater, they’ll play Supertramp’s “Breakfast in America” followed by their latest adventure, “Songs from the Big Chair” by Tears for Fears.

So many huge hits: from “The Logical Song” to “Take the Long Way Home,” and from “Shout” to “Head Over Heels,” there is a pile of material that’s burned into the psyche of a generation. But the deep tracks on both albums are outstanding as well. Might there be surprises from Floyd or the Stones? Hmmm…

Nile Singers comprises members of original bands on the Rags Records label, including Violet Mary, Sub Sentry, Prog Gnostic, and Public Water Supply. The band was built around multi-instrumentalists and a fantastic assortment of singers. When they hit the Big Choruses, the sound is majestic. And essentially, it’s a big, ol’ sing-along party!
