Event Description

New York Comic Con 2021 is a fully vaccinated event. Everyone entering the Javits Center over the age of 12 will need to be fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved or authorized by the FDA or WHO against COVID-19 in order to attend and participate at NYCC and must show proof of vaccination at their time of entry. NYCC attendees younger than 12 must be accompanied by a fully vaccinated Guardian and provide proof of a negative rapid antigen COVID-19 test taken within 6 hours of entry to each day of the event, OR a negative lab PCR COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of entry of each day of the event. NYCC welcomes legal professionals for our exciting Continuing Legal Education courses. You may only register for one professional badge per application. If you would like to attend both classes, you should select the Thursday course with a 4-Day badge and the Sunday course with no badge purchase.

We do not provide the opportunity to purchase additional NYCC badges upon approval.

Activation is required for all NYCC 2021 tickets prior to entering the event. You can activate your tickets once you receive them in the mail or pick them up onsite at NYCC21.com/activate

PLEASE NOTE: By applying for registration to either CLE course you are representing and warranting that you are a registered attorney in good standing at least one U.S. jurisdiction. Your eligibility for this course is subject to review and if you are deemed ineligible to complete this course, your course and badge will be refunded.


Once CLE course registration has closed no late applications will be accepted due to the limited number of Industry badges available.


FROM PANEL TO PUBLISHER: REPRESENTING COMIC BOOK CREATOR CLIENTS IN 2021

This seminar has been approved for 2.5 CLE * credits in areas of professional practice for NY and 1 CLE credit in the area of diversity and inclusion.


In this first course, we present an overview of the comic book industry over the past two years, highlight new areas of litigation and transactional work, and provide the fundamentals of representing comic book industry clients. We will explore new distribution models, NFTs, and myriad new cases impacting the comic book and graphic novel publishes and the attorneys who represent them. We will also be addressing diversity and inclusion topics key to representing clients in the comic book industry (as well as general practice), which will also provide attendees with credit towards the New York State’s diversity and inclusion CLE requirements.


CLE: COMIC BOOK CONTRACT NEGOTIATION AND DRAFTING PRACTICUM 2021
Sunday, October 10 (10:45AM -1:00PM)
This seminar has been approved for 2.5 CLE * credits in areas of professional practice for NY.


This is an intensive two-hour course: attendees will do write a rough draft of key comic book agreement provisions, engage in client interview exercises tailored to the comic book industry, dive into mock negotiations, and issue-spot common problems in publishing contracts. Facilitated by seasoned comic book publishing attorneys, attendees will get a chance to issue-spot, draft, and engage in mock negotiations.


INSTRUCTORS:

Thomas A. Crowell, Esq.
Thomas A. Crowell, Esq. is a partner in the law firm of LaneCrowell, LLP, in the firm's New York office. He is also the Director from Practice, emeritus, of The Indie Film Clinic at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. Thomas counsels clients on a wide range of entertainment law and intellectual property rights issues, in practice areas that range from film and television to comic book publishing, music, and the graphic arts. His comic book creator clients have created some of the most recognizable superheroes in the world.

Thomas is the series editor of the Focal Press "Pocket Lawyer for ... " series and author of both "The Pocket Lawyer for Filmmakers" (Focal Press, 2ed. 2011), and the first dedicated legal guide for the comic book industry: " The Pocket Lawyer for Comic Book Creators" (Focal Press 2014). Thomas received his JD from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where he graduated cum laude, Order of the Coif. He is admitted to the bars of New York, New Jersey, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

David Gallaher is a multi-award-winning video game writer, graphic novelist, podcaster, editor, and co-founder of Bottled Lightning Studios. David has written for Marvel, DC, and many others.

Gamal Hennessy, Esq. is an attorney who specializes in contract review, comic book publishing, and entertainment licensing agreements at G3 – Creative Contract Consulting. Gamal has represented leading publishing clients, such as Marvel and Amazon.

Andy Schmidt is the publisher of CEX Publishing and the founder of Comic Experience®, the online comics school. Andy is also known for his work as an editor and writer for Marvel Comics.

Jeff Trexler, Esq. is the Interim Director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund as well as the Associate Director of the Fashion Law Institute at Fordham Law School.

Robyn Williams, Esq. is Co-Chair of the Trademark Practice Group at Devlin Law Firm. Her practice focuses on intellectual property and related business matters.

Jason Yarn, Esq. is an attorney and agent with the Jason Yarn Literary Agency where he represents narrative and non-fiction writers as well as comic book and graphic novel creators.

Age Restrictions: Children 5 and under will be admitted for free all weekend and no badge is required. Sunday Kids badges are for those ages 6-12 and advanced registration is required. Please prepare to show proof of age onsite.
