Event Description

1989, dir Ildikó Enyedi w/Dorotha Segda, Oleg Yankovsky, 104 min, DCP

Join fans, filmmakers, and hundreds of other mission-driven, community-based theaters for a day of truly exceptional screenings and cinematic experiences… It’s Art House Theater Day!

Ildikó Enyedi’s dreamy, ironic film luminaire was awarded the Caméra d’Or for best first feature at Cannes in 1989 and is long overdue for a rediscovery. One fateful December night, as Edison introduces his Illuminating Company in New Jersey, two orphaned twin sisters in Budapest are separated as children. 20 years later, on the eve of the 20th century, their lives intertwine once again while aboard the Orient Express. Lili has grown into a prim and principled anarchist while Dóra has become a luxurious woman of loose morals, but both are having an affair with the same man (Tarkovsky regular Yankovsky) unbeknownst to all parties.

The complete 4K digital restoration of the film was carried out at the Hungarian Filmlab, supervised by the Hungarian Film Fund – Hungarian National Film Archive in 2017.
