(2018) dir Alonso Ruizpalacios w/Gael García Bernal, Leonardo Ortizgris, Alfredo Castro, Simon Russell Beale [128 min; DCP]
Gael García Bernal stars as Juan Nuñez, a disaffected slacker in the suburbs of 1980s Mexico City who can’t seem to finish veterinary school or move out of his parents’ upper-middle class home. One summer, while working a temp job at the National Anthropology Museum, he gets it into his head to rob the place. Enlisting his childhood friend (Ortizgris) as support, he devises a plan that takes full advantage of lax security during the holiday season. The heist goes off with barely a hitch but… that’s about where Juan’s plan ends. Stuck with priceless national treasures and with the eyes of the country on the lookout for the robbers, the pair find themselves adrift in the country side and threatened with capture or worse at every turn.
Inspired by the true story of one of the biggest museum thefts of all time and shot on never-before-filmed locations in Mexico, MUSEO is a sardonic heist film with the heart of a shaggy-dog story. The remarkable second feature from Alonso Ruizpalacios, director of the award-winning festival hit Güeros, is by turns hilarious, thrilling, poignant, and absurd.
