Event Description

Join us at the Underground Cinema by WVIFF for September's Movie That Matter Mondays film: Pride (2014)

About the film:

Realising that they share common foes in Margaret Thatcher, the police and the conservative press, London-based gay and lesbian activists lend their support to striking miners in 1984 Wales.

About the series:

WVIFF Underground Cinema Presents Movies That Matter Mondays - Each month, we will work with a community organization to show an issue-oriented and compelling film relating to their mission.

About the Sponsor:

Rise Up West Virginia formed out of a community meeting in Charleston in early 2017. They came together out of concern for the direction of the country and a belief that politics-as-usual had failed them. They are building an independent political force, not aligned with either major party, in order to pressure politicians to fight for the common good - not an elite few.

What the Critics are Saying:

What a cast Pride has—some of the best famous actors in Britain and lesser-known younger ones that will (and soon) take their place in the firmament. Full review

Pride keeps its sure-footed balance, never sacrificing authenticity on the altar of sincerity, sweetness and light. Full review

Ann Hornaday
Washington Post

The once-ubiquitous “Full Monty” formula is alive and well in “Pride,” a fact-inspired story of an improbable alliance between gay-rights activists and striking miners in the mid-1980s UK. Full review
