(1968) dir D.A. Pennebaker w/Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Byrds, Hugh Masekela, Ravi Shankar [87 min; DCP]
Simply one of the most exciting, kinetic concert films ever shot, MONTEREY POP immerses us in the experience of the proto-Woodstock, a three-day celebration of music and hippie values at the outset of the Summer of Love. D.A. Pennebaker and crew (including fellow documentary legends Al Maysles and Ricky Leacock) capture the crowd and the performances in a fluid, Direct Cinema style using lightweight 16mm cameras and a high-end 8-track sound recorder borrowed from the Beach Boys.
Jerry Garcia jokingly complained about having to perform between the Who destroying everything in sight and Jimi lighting his guitar on fire.
A "Double Feature" ticket additionally allows admission into the 5:30 screening of DON'T LOOK BACK. No additional purchase is necessary.
