Event Description

In 1951, during a conference at The Museum of Modern Art, architect Buckminster Fuller pointed a finger at a group of art teachers and said, “The battle for the human spirit will be fought and won in art rooms of the nation’s schools and in the artists’ studios, but only if the creative arts become a major part of every child’s education and if the artist asserts his significant and historical role as the people’s advocate.” Fuller was referring to something many other artists believe: the core role of art education in increasing awareness, insight, understanding, and judgement in daily living. The teaching artist was to become the catalyst in this educational revolution.

Sara Torres, Education Research Assistant, shares her research about the historical role of The Museum of Modern Art as a place for artists and educators to think together. This workshop will help you to think creatively about links to your curriculum and the ways in which you can tap into students’ life experiences while you explore works of art in the Museum’s galleries. We will collectively question the traditional assumption that education is peripheral to modern art.
