Event Description

The trade-offs we make for money and motherhood.

It's a luxury retreat in upstate New York with all the amenities. The highest quality organic meals, personal trainers, and daily spa treatments: all free of charge. In fact, women are paid incredible sums to stay for months at a time. The only catch is that they can't leave, their movements are monitored, and they are cut off from outside contact while they make the perfect baby for someone else.

Jane is an immigrant from the Philippines and in search of a better life when she commits to being a "Host" at the "Farm," as residents call it. But she becomes torn between life inside and outside, her past and her dreams of the future.

Author Joanne Ramos comes to the Library to discuss the power of speculative fiction, joined by Catherine Burns, artistic director of The Moth.

Mid-Sentence presents a series of conversations with groundbreaking literary voices. Indie authors and cult favorites explore the intersections between literature and lived experience.

ASL interpretation and real-time (CART) captioning available upon request. Please submit your request at least two weeks in advance by emailing accessibility@nypl.org.
