Event Description

45 years ago, the album Transformer launched Lou Reed from the underground way up to Mars, with a little help from Starman Bowie. Mick Rock was there to capture Reed's flight on film, beginning with the iconic album cover and continuing through the wild side of the seventies. In this newly published book, images from throughout the seventies chronicle Reed’s transformations from the unique perspective of a close friend. Transformer presents Reed’s choice of photographs, from the famous to the never-before-seen and showcases several of Reed’s album covers, beginning with Transformer—a lucky development that established Rock and Reed’s 40-year friendship and became one of the most iconic images of modern music. The book also features unseen outtakes, studio sessions, and spontaneous shots of friends including Andy Warhol, Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie.

MICK ROCK is often referred to as “The Man Who Shot the Seventies,” for his photographs of Syd Barrett, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Queen, the Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and Blondie. He has shot over 100 album covers, including Barrett’s Madcap Laughs, Iggy and The Stooges’ Raw Power, Queen’s Queen II (recreated in the music video for “Bohemian Rhapsody”), The Ramones’ End of the Century, and Joan Jett’s I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll. He was the chief photographer on the films The Rocky Horror Picture ShowHedwig and the Angry Inch, and Shortbus and has published numerous books, mostly based on his classic images, including, Glam: An Eyewitness AccountEXPOSED, and The Rise of David Bowie 1972–1973. In the summer of 2017 Magnolia Pictures released a documentary about Mick Rock entitled SHOT! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock.

DAVID FRICKE is a senior writer at Rolling Stone, where he has worked in various capacities for over 30 years. Before joining the staff at Rolling Stone, Fricke wrote for Circus and Good Times. He has appeared in countless music documentaries and has written liner notes for numerous albums, compilations, and box sets, including The Velvet Underground box set Peel Slowly and See, The Ramones compilation Hey! Ho! Let’s Go! The Anthology and the Led Zeppelin best-of compilation Mothership.

The New York Public Library announced in March of 2017 its acquisition of the Lou Reed Archive, which documents the history of Reed’s life as a musician, composer, poet, writer, photographer, and tai-chi student through his own extensive papers, photographs, recordings and other collections of materials.
