Material Girls (Atlanta, GA) torment listeners with a schizophrenic blend of disco, goth rock, post-punk and no wave through savvy musical pieces where 4 different musicians take turns on lead vocal duties. Their songs are like ballistic missiles whose warheads would have been filled with Thrills soap gum, foaming from one’s ears like a catatonic brew.
On stage, Material Girls shred their contagious rhythms, convoluted arrangements and stylish licks with uncanny abandon, leaving crowds in a state of stupor, yet wanting more. Their unique and catchy variable-geometry musical concept has critics raving too. Louder Than War Magazine describes one alignment of the band as “Birthday Party-era Nick Cave fronting an evil B-52s in a John Waters nightmare.” Gigwise says about yet another live form of the collective that “The Siouxsie Sioux-inspired frontwoman sparks the crowd into [a] violent mess of flailing limbs and sprayed beer.” Exclaim! writes about their overall live performance that it is a “mix of angular guitars, glam, disco and punk [...] a captivating, dance-heavy set propelled by bass and disco hi-hats, all Gang of Four cowbell and hard rhythms.”
