Event Description

Nick Storrs has been an instructor in the Adult Education Department at the New York Botanical Garden for over 5 years. He aims to can help you improve your skills in the garden through group lessons that will get you up and out in your garden so as to make the most of it! From basic planting and harvesting skills to perfecting the best tomatoes on the block, he can help you achieve your gardening goals! 


Workshops take place in the Lyndhurst Bowling Pavillion from 3 pm to 5 pm. Please reserve in advance. 


April 28 - Success with Seeds!


Join us as we learn how to start seeds in the home. Growing vegetables and flowers from seeds is easier and cheaper than most people think! We will learn how starting seedlings in the kitchen as a fun, easy and inexpensive way to grow a whole garden’s worth of great produce. The workshop will include a discussion of what materials will be needed, where to find seeds, and how to supply water and light to your new seedlings.


May 12 - Growing in Containers


Grow a garden in pots! Containers are a great way to squeeze a couple more plants into your garden, protect your garden from deer, or keep a window garden. This two-hour workshop will examine what containers are most appropriate for different sized plants, how to chose or make your own potting mix, and practice potting up plants to make our own fantastic container creations!


May 26- Culinary Herbs in the Garden


Spice up your kitchen garden with fresh herbs from Basil to Yarrow! Herbs a great way to bring more flavors and scents to the kitchen garden. We’ll discuss some of the more common herbs used in the kitchen today and how to grow them. Everything from growing indoors in pots to cultivating the perfect knot garden will be covered. Starting from bed preparation and find the right herbs for you all the way through preserving their flavor, this workshop will get you growing your best herbs.


June 9 - Waterworks!


Sprinklers, soaker hoses, and driplines! Learn how to design the perfect irrigation system for your garden so that it thrives all summer long.  We will walk through a number of different types of irrigation systems and how to choose the best one for your garden. We will build a simple irrigation system together and find good sources of supplies and materials so you can make and repair your own irrigation at home.


June 23 - Garden trellises


Trellis can help us grow healthier vegetables in less space all while making our gardens more beautiful! Whether you are growing tomatoes, cucumbers or clematis a trellis will help your garden thrive. We will explore a number of different trellising options, how to choose the best ones for different vegetable and how to build them yourself. The hands-on class will include making two different types of trellises that can be used in the garden.
